How I style
a coffee table

A coffee table is one of those pieces that can completely change the feel of a room. When it’s styled well, it makes the entire space feel more finished, collected, and intentional. My approach is always to keep things simple, layered, and livable.

I usually start with one larger anchor piece. This could be a vase, bowl, or decorative object with enough presence to ground the arrangement. I love using something with texture or an organic shape because it adds softness and keeps the table from feeling too perfect.

Next, I add a small stack of coffee table books. Books are one of my favorite styling tools because they add height, color, and personality while creating a base for smaller objects. I usually stack two or three and keep the tones fairly neutral so they blend naturally into the room.

From there, I bring in something smaller and sculptural. A candle, decorative box, small bowl, or vintage-inspired object works beautifully here. I like mixing materials—wood, stone, glass, metal, ceramic—because the variation keeps a neutral palette interesting.

I also almost always include something organic. Fresh or faux stems, branches, or florals instantly bring life to a coffee table. I tend to choose arrangements that feel loose and slightly imperfect rather than overly structured.

One of the biggest things I pay attention to is varying the height of the objects. If everything is the same height, the table can feel flat. A taller floral arrangement paired with medium-height books and a lower candle or bowl creates a much more balanced look.

I also leave some empty space. A coffee table still needs to function, so I never feel like every inch has to be filled. That little bit of breathing room is often what makes the styling feel more elevated.

My go-to coffee table formula

  • One larger vase, bowl, or statement piece

  • Two or three stacked books

  • One smaller decorative object

  • A candle or two

  • Something organic, like stems or florals

  • Plenty of open space

The goal isn’t to make your coffee table look perfectly styled at all times. I want it to feel beautiful but still easy to live with. Start with a few pieces you love, play with height and texture, and don’t be afraid to edit things down.

A thoughtfully styled coffee table should feel like an extension of the room—not a display you’re afraid to touch.
